Kid Dracula
Kid Dracula
Kid Dracula |
---|
Also known as: Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun (JP) This game has a hidden sound test. |
Kid Dracula is a rather silly Game Boy spin-off of the Castlevania series, and a pseudo-sequel to the Famicom game of the same name. Of course, that game never left Japan, so the story here won't make too much sense to those who never even knew it existed.

Regional Differences
Title Screen
Japan | US |
---|---|
In the Japanese title, Dracula-kun stands atop his castle which is fashioned into the game's title. A speech bubble reads "Push Start". In the US version, Dracula-kun's head has been moved upwards, redrawn to be smaller and shaded, and his cloak has been fashioned into the game's title instead.
Intro
Japan | US |
---|---|
The intro scene in the Japanese version features a church bell tower; to comply with Nintendo of America's policies at the time, it was replaced with a generic castle spire, apparently based on the one in Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun's title screen, for the US version (but the bell sound effect was retained).
Gameplay and Level Changes
Many gameplay changes exist, mostly to increase the difficulty.
- In the Japanese version, enemies that die stay dead. In the US version, this has changed so enemies respawn as soon as you move half a screen away.
Japan | US |
---|---|
The spell text was reduced by one character for some reason, the localization team deciding on using three-letter acronyms instead of four. The Japanese version starts you off with four lives and 20 coins; the US version halves the life count and removes the coins.
1-2
Japan | US |
---|---|
The big heart was replaced with a small heart.
1-3
Japan | US |
---|---|
The maximum heart increase is replaced by a big heart.
Level 1 Boss
Japan | US |
---|---|
The three ghost boss characters of Level 1 have had the the manji / swastika on their foreheads removed and the tops of their heads rounded due to the unintentional resemblance to Ku Klux Klan. Something similar happened in EarthBound.
In addition, the bosses gained more health in the US version.
Song titles
Similarly to its older brother Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, the songs in the Japanese version's sound test all have unique titles, whereas in the US version they are just named "BGM1" through "BGM20".
