Tra il 1942 e il 1944 vennero varate ben 200 unità del tipo Faimile D, una grande motocannoniera con scafo in legno dalla forma unica, in quanto esso aveva una struttura con prua a 'V' pronunciato, che si raccordava poi con una carena tonda grazie ad uno scalino. La nave in parola era una potente arma di combattimento, ma sfortunatamente l'elevata velocità possibile con tali mezzi navali si ripercuiteva nei punti deboli dello scafo, troppo grande per la sua struttura lignea e la velocità di 29 nodi, così si dovette rinforzare e riparate sempre più di frequente.
Le possibilità di armamento erano varie, motocannoniera, motosilurante, o addirittura combinata (MTB/MGB), con una dotazione di armi che addirittura arrivava a 4 siluri da 457mm, 2 cannoni QF 6 pounder da 57 mm, 2 mitragliere Oerlikon da 20 mm e 4 da 12,7. Addirittura, alcune ebbero un cannone da 114 mm a prua, a canna corta. Chiaramente essi avevano molti sforzi da dover sopportare e la struttura ne risentiva.
I motori erano 4 da 5.000 hp, con gli utili ed efficienti riduttori molto presto adottati per la sua efficienza complessiva. Innumerevoli i combattimenti contro le unità costiere dell'Asse, specie le S-Boot.
