General Differences



  • There is no music at this point in development; only sound effects are present.

  • There are no FMVs, either. Running the game takes you straight to the title screen.

  • Present in the game's files is an FMV for 411 Video Magazine (as the file name, 411VM.STR, suggests), but for now it is nothing more than a placeholder file. As a result, any level that uses an FMV has a glitched surface texture where it should be.

  • You are unable to save in the prototype, and as such can't progress in the unavailable Career mode.


Menu Differences



  • The title screen and menus have a red motif and a slightly different title icon than the final.

  • All the menus themselves are different from the final.

  • The only options available in this build are the Single Session and 2-Player options.

  • The character select menu and stage select are incomplete. The former repeats Chad Muska's character model five times in between Buckey Lasek and Tony Hawk; selecting the repeat models defaults to Tony Hawk.

  • The Board Select screen is missing in this build.

  • The load screens are very different from the final.

  • The font used in all the menus is different.

  • The demo that plays after a period of inactivity is absent in the prototype.

  • 2-Player mode is present and functional, but you can only select Player 1's character. Player 2 defaults to a skater not seen in the character select (supposed to be Bob Burnquist's model), the game mode defaults to Trick Attack, and the stage defaults to Skate Park.

Gameplay Differences

  • The level select has nine levels select-able. Only one level, the classic concrete stage, will crash without loading.

  • The Warehouse and Portland levels aren't available at this point.

  • While the UI is different, all of the gimmicks (Specials, point bonuses, time limits, etc.) are fully implemented. Specials, however, are met with a orange halo around the player, as well as a static orange meter instead of just a flashing meter.

  • Blood does not appear when you fail to land properly at this stage of development.

  • The game, visually, is buggy at times: from texture tearing and geometry clipping to, in rare cases, loading issues on the map.

  • Bonuses and "SKATE" icons are different at this stage.

  • The game does not automatically switch on Analog mode.

  • Auto Kick isn't implemented yet. You'll have to press Square to kick manually.

  • The game controls are identical to the final version's, including the soft reset key (hold Start + Select for two seconds).

  • You can't perform a handstand yet.


Cheat codes



  • Code Square, Circle, Cross toggles Skip to restart appearing in pause menu.

  • Code Down, Down, Triangle shows a debug information box.

  • Codes Cross, Triangle, Circle, Cross, Cross, Cross, Cross, Cross, Triangle, Circle, Cross, Square, Down, Up, Left, Left, Triangle, Up, Right, Down, Square, Circle, Up, Do, Cross, Square and Up, Square, Up, Cross something unknown.


Pause menu


The pause menu for Single Session is different from the final, with the same font as the main menus, no faded background, and an ugly looking "PAUSED" placeholder. Replacing sound levels in the prototype of the game is an option called Skip to restart. What this does is restart the game, but places you (or attempts to do so) at a different spawn point.

There is a second replay option called Replay Highlights. What this does is similar to Replay in the final, only that it cuts to your coolest tricks and wipeouts. It was likely pulled from the final because you could only select one option the first time without crashing when you selected the other option the second time the menu appears.

  • Aside from the added minor details, a grind rail leading up to what would become the hidden tape path was removed. In the final, a ramp is used to get to the path. Speaking of the tape, it is placed in front of the "FMV" billboard in the prototype, whereas in the final it's at the end of a long ramp.

  • The fans leading to the roof of the school were also removed. The fans have virtually no clipping, so it was a nuisance to have the fans. An extra building was added to the scenery, and thus a new secret path was made available.

  • Oddly, the wall that contains graffiti in the final uses the same placeholder texture that the FMV billboards use.

  • Geometrically identical to the final version, but lacks some texture details.

Downhill

This is the more completed of the two stages that were dropped from the final. Perhaps they were planning a second downhill challenge before they dropped it?


While this stage looks like it could've been in the final game, its state in this build suggests it either didn't really get off the ground or was already on its way out:



  • There is only one point in the entire level where you can successfully grind on an edge.

  • The aforementioned visual glitches are out of control, polygons are tearing up right behind the skater, and there's flickering like none other.

  • The level is pretty big. About 1:30 or more of your time will be spent travelling down the level.

  • The goal appears to revolve around collecting tapes that are scattered around the level, but there are so many that it's impossible to collect them all unless you do it all in one shot.

  • This level does not load and freezes/crashes the game.

If Downhill was being shown the door at this point, Freeway was being kicked to the curb.



  • This level is relatively small compared to other stages at this point. It also has very few opportunities to actually score points.

  • There are a set of three pieces of highway in the air and on the ground, some ramps, construction vehicles...and not much else. The area is rather empty, so it was probably abandoned.

Test Level


As the name suggests, this should be a level to test the functions of the game itself. Oddly, however, that only seems to be the case with the physics, and even then that's being generous.


There are virtually no opportunities to score points, there are no bonuses, the graphics are glitched in places, you can skate through some items, and you can even skate on walls or upside down! The design of the level seems like a rough draft of a park at night.


This level can be restored to the prototype through a patch.

PSX.EXE


The file PSX.EXE, when viewed in a hex editor, there can be found hidden developer text, some of which mention weapons (Rapid Laser, Particle Beam...). There is also some minor vulgar language, mentions of death and plague, and other miscellaneous text. The Majority of the in-game text is in this file as well... and don't forget that Kate, YOWSA! (0x86864).
